Compassionate love involves feelings of mutual respect, trust, and affection  while passionate love involves intense feelings and sexual attraction.  ?? What Is Passionate Love? Hatfield defines passionate love as a state of intense longing for union with another. This type of love tends to be more common at the outset of a relationship. People in this state of love tend to experience very powerful feelings for each other. They need to be near the other person, may think about the other person constantly, and experience extreme distress when separated. Passionate love also comes in two different forms. Requited love occurs when the two individuals share mutual attraction and feelings for one another. Unrequited love, on the other hand, can occur when only one person feels passionate love or if the two are prevented from being together for some reason. Requited love results in two people forming a relationship and being together, while unrequited love results in feelings of despair, anxiety, and loneliness. Some of the key cognitive, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of passionate love include: Intrusive Thoughts About the Partner: People often experience almost constant thoughts about the person they are in love with. Not only are these thoughts persistent, but they can also intrude at almost any time during the day or night.The Idealization of the Other Person or the Relationship: People in passionate love tend to believe that the object of their affections can do no wrong. They also tend to believe that their relationship is without faults, is destined to be, or is a perfect match.A Strong Desire to Know and Be Known: People in passionate love want to know everything about their partner. They also want their partner to know everything about them.Strong Emotions About the Other Person: People in this type of love feel good when things are going well, but may be devastated when things go awry.A Need to Maintain Physical Closeness: In addition to being strongly attracted to the other person, people in passionate love try to maintain close physical proximity. What Is Compassionate (Companionate) Love? Where passionate love is marked by its intensity, compassionate love is characterized by its level of intimacy. Compassionate love, also called companionate love, is about intimacy, trust, commitment, and affection. In a long-term relationship, passionate love typically simmers down to compassionate love within one to two years. People who are in compassionate love still feel passionate about one another, but the intensity typically feels less overwhelming and urgent. This type of love involves caring deeply for the other person, truly knowing the other individual, and is committed to the other person through both good times and bad. Even when disagreements take place, people who share compassionate love remain in love and dedicated to one another. Some of the key cognitive, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of compassionate (companionate) love include: Long-Term Commitment: Companionate love is marked by a long-lasting and enduring commitment to each other.Deep Intimacy: People who share compassionate love are able to share every aspect of themselves with each other. Mutual sharing of feelings and concerns is a hallmark of this form of love.Trust: Compassionate love is marked by a deep trust in the other person. Factors That Influence Passionate and Compassionate Love So what determines whether people end up in passionate or compassionate love? According to Hatfield, some of the factors associated with passionate love include: Timing:  Being ready to be in love with another person is essential. If you are at a stage in your life where you are not sure you want to be in a relationship, you will also be less likely to experience falling in love.Early  Attachment Styles:  Securely attached individuals tend to form deeper, longer-lasting love while those who are anxiously attached tend to fall in and out of love quickly. Those who are securely attached may still experience passionate love, but this love is also more likely to eventually grow into companionate/companionate love. Those with insecure styles are more likely to experience intense passionate love that then fades without growing into something more intimate and lasting.Similarity:  Hatfield and Rapson note that we tend to fall passionately in love with people who are relatively good-looking, personable, affectionate, and similar to ourselves. Compatibility is also an important factor that helps passionate love grow into compassionate love. While oppo sites may attract at times, people are typically more likely to stay in love if they share things in common. One important thing to remember about these two types of love is that passionate love is usually briefer, while compassionate love may be more likely to stand the test of time. Passionate love is intense, but it is generally very fleeting. Researchers have looked at how relationships progress among new couples, newlyweds, and those married for a longer time and found that while passionate love is more intense at the beginning of relationships, it tends to give way to compassionate love that is focused on intimacy and commitment. Passionate love may be quick to fade, but compassionate love endures. Researchers have long suggested that passionate love tends to be the more likely type of love to fade. Interestingly, more recent research by Hatfield and her colleagues has suggested that time can have an equally detrimental effect on both passionate and companionate love. One study comparing passionate and companionate love between newlyweds and long-term marriages also found that both newlywed men and women tended to feel equal levels of passion. However, the researchers also found that newlywed women were more likely to love their partner compassionately at a greater level than their partner expressed in return. The Passionate Love Scale Hatfield and Sprecher developed the  Passionate Love Scale  that has been used worldwide with people of every age. It asks questions based on cognitive components (what and how often you think about your partner), behavioral  components (how committed you are and what you do for the other person), and emotional components (how you feel about your partner). Respondents are asked to think about the object of their affections, and then answer questions similar to the following: Do you feel like your emotions have been on a roller coaster since you have been involved with this person?Would you experience great despair if he or she left you?Do you ever feel like you cannot stop thinking about this person?Do you feel like you would rather be with this person than anyone else?Do you enjoy studying this persons body or movements?Do you feel a powerful attraction to this person?Do you feel depressed when things dont go right in your relationship with this person? If you can answer yes to some or most of these questions, then it is probably a sign that what you are experiencing is passionate love. Passionate and Compassionate Love and Relationships While it is one thing to understand what these two types of love are conceptually, how might these concepts play out in your real-world relationships? In reality, you may be more likely to experience passionate love in those early stages of a new relationship. As your infatuation grows, your passion for the other person may build and eventually peak. As your relationship continues, this passion may eventually be tempered and grow into a more compassionate/companionate form of love. Companionate love may not necessarily be marked by wild passion, excitement, or obsessive thoughts that are seen in passionate love. However, this compassionate form of love does include feelings of tenderness, a strong bond, friendship, and enjoyment of the others company. Once you have established a more compassionate form of love, this does not mean that you will not experience great passion from time to time. In fact, some research suggests that romantic love marked by intensity, engagement, and sexual interest (but without the obsessive component that is often common in early stages of relationships) is associated with higher self-esteem, increased well-being, and improve marital satisfaction. Such findings suggest that the strongest and most lasting relationships may be those in which people are able to find a balance between companionate and passionate love. So what can you do to rekindle feelings of romantic love, even if you are in a long-term relationship where it feels like the flames of passion have long faded? Look for ways to get out of your rut. Spend time together doing new things or seeking new adventures. Taking a dance or cooking class together, going on a trip to a new location, or even seeking adventures together in the outdoors are all ways to foster trust, intimacy, and even romantic passion. The are several different ways to choose a topic for your persuasive essay. Your teacher may give you a prompt or a choice of several prompts. Or you may have to come up with a topic, based on your own experience or the texts youve been studying. If you do have some choice in the topic selection, its helpful if you select one that interests you and about which you already feel strongly. Another key factor to consider before you begin writing is the audience. If youre trying to persuade a roomful of teachers that homework is bad, for instance, youll use a different set of arguments than you would if the audience was made up of high school students or parents. Once you have the topic and have considered the audience, there are a few steps to prepare yourself before you begin writing your persuasive essay: Brainstorm.  Use whatever method of brainstorming works best for you. Write down your thoughts about the topic. Make sure you know where you stand on the issue. You can even try asking yourself some questions. Ideally, youll try to ask yourself questions that could be used to refute your argument, or that could convince a reader of the opposite point of view. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Essay example -- Fertility Chemistry

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis In the United States, an estimated 2.3 million couples are considered infertile [Wekesser, 1996]. This creates a large need for infertility specialists and clinics specializing in fertility treatments. With the quickly advancing field of rep roductive services and the quest for creating better, healthier babies, a new service called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is being offered in conjunction with In vitro fertilization. PGD is a procedure that combines In vitro fertilization and genetic screening. In vitro fertilization is a procedure that requires a large time commitment; the entire procedure lasts about four weeks. The woman receives daily injections for seven to twelve days to stimulate the release of her eggs. After she begins to ovulate, the eggs are retrieved by inserting a needle through her vaginal wall. The eggs are then fertilized in a petri dish. After fertilization, the resulting embryos are allowed to mature to the six or eight cell stage. Then with the use of micromanipulation, a technician extracts one cell from each embryo. Polymerase Chain Reaction is then used to produce multiple copies of the cell’s DNA. [Wekesser,1996] Scientists are then able to test for specific disorders once they know the location of the gene that causes the disorder and have developed a test for its presence [Jaroff,1996]. The healthy embryos are implanted or frozen for future use, and the unhealthy e mbryos are d iscarded [Kenen,1994]. This procedure is still being perfected and clinics that perform this procedure are scarce. According to Denise Grady [1995], in the United States there are only seven clinics that perform PGD. Poetry Essay

Poetry is a form of literary art and uses particular forms and conventions to suggest alternative meaning in the words and to evoke some emotional responses. There are sound patterns in poetry which create further meaning, such as assonance, alliteration and onomatopoeia. These sound effects have a particular function in a poem. Poems often make heavy use of imagery and word association to quickly convey emotions. [1] Poetry is distinguished from prose because are used some techniques such as rhyme, meter and repetition. The same sounds can convey different meanings and it depends on the context of a poem. Sound patterns can be also discovered in some advertising slogans. In advertisement we have the freedom to change the natural order of the language. It depends on the product and the target group of consumers. The advertising text has to capture the reader’s or listener’s attention. Therefore the natural order of the language is modified, shaped and stylized. One of the most frequently used devices in slogans, catchphrases and article titles is alliteration: Don’t Live a Little, Live a Lotto! 2] The advertising slogans are the most effective means of drawing attention to one or more aspects of the product. In this text we can spot an example of foregrounding. ‘Deviation, which is a linguistic phenomenon, has an important psychological effect on readers (and hearers). If a part of a poem is deviant, it becomes especially noticeable, or perceptually prominent. We call this psychological effect foregrounding’. [3] Most of the writers use the sound of words in such a way that the readers’ attention is immediately engaged. The most common mean which is involved by the writers is repetition. Our attention is captivated and we start analysing the reasons why the writers use it. We can recognise play of sounds : little/lotto. There is also alliteration- the repetition of ‘l’ and ‘t’ sounds. Alliteration refers to tbe repetition of the same or similar consonants. /t/ is a voiceless, alveolar, plosive sound. It is produced without vibrations of the vocal cords, by obstructing the airflow in the vocal tract. /l/ is a voiced, bilateral, retroflex and approximant sound. The vocal cords are vibrating during the articulation and the airstream flows over the both sides of the tongue. When poets construct a poem they carefully choose words for their meanings, connotation and sounds. According to Paul Simpson ‘we make connections between, on the one hand, the physical properties of the sound represented within a text and, on the other, the non- linguistic phenomena situated outside a text to which these sounds relate’[4]. The sound effects of the poetic text are basic to the interpretation of poetry. When a relationship between sound and meaning is obvious, then it can reinforce the significance of a word for speaker and hearer. ‘The way people ‘sound’ their language can, certainly, be an indication of their individual or cultural personalities†¦ Speakers of a different language, from a different culture, might associate different implications with such sounds’. [5] The most critics are interested in the form of the poem and its meaning, and the poet’s message. According to Paul Fussell ‘Poetic forms are like that: they tend to say things even if words are not at the moment fitted to their patterns. As Louis MacNeice has said, â€Å"In any poet’s poem the shape is half the meaning. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢. [6] Poetic forms refer to different sets of rules followed by poems. The rules describe such ascpects as the meter or rhythm of the poem, the rhyme scheme or the use of alliteration. One of the basic ways in which poetry can be distinguished from prose is the possession of metre. Some critics maintain the idea that the rhythm and metre are the same thing. The difference between both is in the way in which they relate to the whole. The metre is ‘an extra layer of rhythmic structuring’. 7] The rhythm is ‘the apprehension of a series of events as a regularly repeated pulse of energy, an experience which has a muscular as well as a mental dimension’. [8] The following lines aim to discuss the relationship between sound patterns, their function and their contribution towards the meaning a certain poem generates. Attention will be paid to the poem ‘My Last Duchess’, written by Robert Browning. He was an English poet and playwright whose verses of dramatic monologues made him one of the most renowned Victorian poets today. The poem is anthologised as an example of the dramatic monologue, ‘in which an identified character, or person, is the sole speaker: that is, the voice in the poem is ‘playing’ a role as in drama’. [9] The structure and the style of this poem play a significant role. It contains three formal elements – an occasion, a speaker, and a hearer. The words in dramatic monologues not only convey setting and action but also reveal the speaker’s character. The comments which he makes reveal information about his personality and psyche, knowingly or unknowingly. The main focus of a dramatic monologue is the personal information, not the topic which the speaker happens to be discussing. ‘We can see the personality of both poet and speaker in dramatic monologue, and can be aware of them operating as a reflex in the elements of action which is constant picture and vice versa’. [10] Browning defined the poem as a dramatic lyric. It is dramatic because there is an actor in it and performs a scene. However, at the same time it can’t be said that it is a typical lyric poem. The poem appears as one half of a conversation. He is not speaking his thoughts aloud to himself while he is alone. In general poems are written with the ‘full body’ of words and have their own meaning. ‘Meaning is something the reader intuits through the distorting influence of ‘form’, something the writer may choose, but does not necessarily control. ’[11] The goal of Browning is to illustrate a scene. There is a relation between sounds and meanings, the reality which language may represent. In his piece of work Robert Browning uses many techniques – enjambment, a simple rhyme scheme and caesura to convey various characteristics and qualities about the speaker and the situation. Mick Short claims that ‘The basic idea was that poems should enact what they described: ‘the sound must seem an echo to the sense’ (Alexander Pope, ‘An Essay on Criticism’, line 365). Musicality revolves around phonetic and rhythmic effects in particular, and it is thus necessary to be able to do metrical analysis in order to be able to explain important effects in many poems’. [12] ‘My last Duchess’ is written in iambic pentameter in order to imitate natural speech so that the poet is not confused with the persona. Browning’s intention is to imitate natural speech could be to distance himself from the Duke, who is the speaker in the poem.

Both men’s work was revolutionary for their times, underpinning the transformative shift to a constructivist way of thinking, which emerged as the most significant influence on education of the 21st Century (James Bader, 2002). Piaget, was the first psychologist to investigate the world from the perspective of the child, determining that children and adults had different cognitive processes, while Vygotsky, formed the influential Social-cultural Development Theory.
